The manufacturing process of gears can generally be divided into the following stages:
Gear blank machining: The heat-treated blank undergoes mechanical processing, primarily to prepare for the next stage of gear profile machining. This process creates reference surfaces, ensuring that the accuracy of the gear’s bore and end faces closely meets the specified technical requirements.
Gear shaping: Precision finishing of the gear profile to achieve the required tooth accuracy needed for the final finishing process.
Heat Treatment: If quenching is not required, gear manufacturing can be completed simply by machining the tooth profile. For gears that do require quenching, the primary goal is to achieve the specified hardness requirements on the tooth surfaces.
Gear Finishing: Gears that have undergone quenching typically require precision finishing to correct any tooth profile deformation caused by the quenching process, further enhancing tooth accuracy and reducing surface roughness—ultimately ensuring the gears meet the required precision standards.
Gear end finishing (post-processing): Gear end treatments include rounding, chamfering, deburring, and other processes. After rounding or chamfering, gears can smoothly engage when sliding axially. Chamfering also removes sharp edges at the gear ends, preventing these edges from chipping or cracking during gear operation.
